Carmenère resurfaced in Chile in 1993; it was thought to be extinct since phylloxera hit Bordeaux in the 1880's. It is considered a Chilean variety as this is its only home at the moment. It is also called the "Jurassic Park" grape, as it returned from supposed extinction.
