Item #4 - A Tryptych of 2001 Sauternes
2001 will go down in history as one of the greatest vintages for Sauternes, the world famous sweet dessert wine. It is certainly the greatest vintage in the last 40 years. The three half bottles (375mL) sauternes represented here are all now quite rare and hard to find Classified Growths Chateaux Guiraud, de Malle and Coutet . At almost ten years of age, these are now starting to come out of hibernation and will be a wonderful end to that special dinner party. Pair with an exotic fruit salad, fruit flan, aged or blue cheeses or a simple ripe mango. You could certainly cellar these valuable wines for another decade for more pronounced aromatics, but the freshness and fruitiness is appealing now. Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate gave scores of 94, 93 and 93 points respectively while James Suckling of the Wine Spectator gave 96, 95 and 93 points respectively..
