Dirk's Wine Picks - Updated July 27
We are always looking for bargains, and these three recommendations definitely fit the bill. For the summer, the2009 Quinta da Alorna Rosé (Ribatejo, Portugal) - $16.99
is a long awaited blush that has finally arrived. Made from Touriga Nacional, one of the key grapes of Portuguese Vintage Port, this dark ruby-colored Rosé is quite full-bodied, with bracing acids and lots of mouthwatering fruit. Big enough to match with grilled meats, the dark ruby color reminds of a new world wine.
The Chilean 2006 Undurraga Cabernet Sauvignon - $15.99 is made with selected grapes grown in the famous Colchagua Valley. Intense ruby red in color, aromatics of ripe cherries and dark berry fruit. Medium bodied, it would be lovely for pairing with white meats and grilled pork, perfect for the deck.
Finally, a fabulous 2005 Bordeaux, the Chateau des Gravieres - $28.99. With a half hour aeration, lovely tobacco leaf, wet stones and minerals are accompanied with a velvety mouthfeel of full-bodied dark ripe blackberry fruit. Stunning value from the great 2005 vintage. A must try!
