Dirk's Wine Picks - Updated January 25

The Staete Landt Map Maker Sauvignon Blanc has lovely guava and canteloupe notes along with the expected gooseberry. The exotic tropical fruit of this wine is out of the ordinary at the $20 price point.

Everyone is drinking Argentinean Malbec, but this Vina Cobos El Felino Cabernet Sauvignon out of Mendoza has plenty of the requisite bold creamy wood notes but lots of rich and ripe Cabernet dark fruit to match. Made by the famous Paul Hobbs out of California, this is a big style of red which would show well with some decanting and a slab of grilled beef. Well-made.

Finally, a new entry into Alberta from the wild and exotic Chester Osborn of d'Arenberg. The Cenosilicaphobic (the fear of an empty glass) Cat is a most unusual blend of Sagrantino (made famous in Umbria, Italy) and Cinsault (the genetic parent of South Africa's Pinotage). A must try for those who want something unusual.
