2008 Peter Lehmann Futures Shiraz (Barossa Valley, Australia)
Wine - Red $27.99 (750mL)
The first wine that this winery ever sold was called "The Futures Shiraz," because it was sold to their friends and family as a "pay now and it will be delivered in two years" arrangement (much like buying Bordeaux futures). The reason for this was simple: starting a winery takes lots of money, and they needed the cash to ensure they did, in fact, have a future!
The Futures is classic Barossa Shiraz. It is both enjoyable upon release and capable of aging for several years. 2008 was a fine red wine vintage in the Barossa, and this Shiraz was made from outstanding parcels of fruit sourced from a small number of specialist Barossa growers. The bouquet features aromas of dark chocolate, lashings of prunes, and a hint of mixed spice. Superbly structured, with an intensity and depth of the fruit that is reined in by firm tannins and beautifully integrated oak. Try pairing this with braised lamb shanks, rich casseroles, and mature cheddar.
