2009 Chocalán Syrah (Maipo Valley, Chile)
Wine - Red $14.49 (750mL)
The 2009 Vina Chocalan Syrah is a remarkable example of inexpensive Syrah, and one that will make the Aussies sit up and take notice. Made from 100% Syrah, this velvety wine has floral and fruity notes which are complemented by a touch of vanilla and toast followed by a long and elegant finish. Good volume and structure, and good acidity lends the wine a fresh liveliness. Chocalan's 80 hectares of vineyard are situated in the Maipo Valley, nestled between the Andes and the Coastal Mountain range. Proximity to the Pacific Ocean ensures the heat of the warm days is mitigated by the cool breezes funneled down the valley at night. This gives a longer ripening period, and more elegant, less jammy wines as a result. Delicious and inexpensive.
