2009 Château Domeyne Cru Bourgeois (Bordeaux - St. Estèphe, France)

Chateau Domeyne is a tiny Cru Bourgeois estate (5 hectares) located right next to the famous 3rd Growth Calon Segur. Owned by Clare Villars of Chasse Spleen, Ferriere and Haut-Bages Liberal fame, it is made from an unusual blend for St. Estephe of 60% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. There is some lovely depth of fruit going on here, inviting floral nose of cherry blossom more akin to a Margaux, some earthiness to tell you its St. Estephe and a prestine colour with a lovely reflective ruby purple. Red fruits, with some cassis leaf underneath. Wet stones, bracken and good licorice mouthfeel ending with a ripe concentrated cassis finish of grainy tannins. This is a big wine and an excellent 2009 Bordeaux for under $50.
