  • Bidding opens on Wednesday, March 28th and are accepted in minimum of $10 increments. Because of the street artists who will be creating their masterpieces on Al Fresco day itself, we feel we want to give their pieces the maximum time to generate the interest they deserve, thus we are extending the auction deadline this year to 6pm, Saturday, June 16th (one week after Al Fresco Day). If you really want an item, we suggest you be in the store to bid in person.

    If you can't make it down to the store and want to place an absentee bid, please email us at "info@devinewines.ca" with your maximum amount for any item and we will bid on your behalf in $10 increments up to your max - all absentee bids must be into us by 3pm on Saturday, June 16th. Viewing of all auction items at deVine's.

    Winners will be contacted the week of June 18th - we're asking the winners to claim pay and pickup their items within 2 weeks of being contacted.

    Item #1 - A Mini-Vertical of Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf-du-Pape deVine Wines and Spirits






















    One of the great estates in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Le Vieux Donjon was founded in 1979 (relatively young when compared to others), but its track record of success is first rate. Farmed organically, with tremendous aging potential, the grapes are late picked and bottled unfiltered. Tar and earthy are its trademark and the style is decidedly traditional.

    1999 Vieux Donjon - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate (91 points): Le Vieux Donjon's 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape offers soaring aromas of barbecue spice, licorice, herbs, tar, black cherries, and blackberries. This powerful, rich, full-bodied effort is more up-front and accessible than most vintages, but there is no compromise in the richness and mouthfilling characteristics consistently offered by this estate. Drink this sexy, compelling 1999 between 2004-2020.

    2004 Vieux Donjon - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (94 points, Wine Spectator's #31 Wine of the Year in 2006): Tight on the nose, but with a great beam of red and black fruits, as well as hoisin sauce, olive, cocoa, tar and raspberry ganache. Long, lush finish pumps out darker and darker fruit. Has the racy profile of the vintage, but its range sets it apart. Best from 2007 through 2026. 4,500 cases made.

    2006 Vieux Donjon - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (93 points): Slightly firm, with juniper, sage and sandalwood hints framing dark plum, currant, coffee and mineral notes. The grippy finish has a cedar note in the background, with hints of black tea and tar. A gutsy style, with fresh acidity in reserve. Best from 2009 through 2028. 4,330 cases made.

    Item #5 - A Pair of 2004 Pomerols deVine Wines and Spirits deVine Wines and Spirits













    The Bordeaux appellation of Pomerol produces the best Merlot based wines in the world. This tiny region with tiny production (a few thousand cases) is highly sought by wine afficionados around the world. L'Eglise Clinet and Vieux Chateau Certan (affectionately known as 'VCC') are both historic Pomerol estates that stand amongst the creme de la creme of Merlot. In fact, VCC was held in higher regard than Petrus in the 1800's. These two 2004's require 3-4 more years of cellaring or if you can't wait, decant 2-3 hours and serve with roast lamb.

    2004 Chateau L'Eglise Clinet - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate (93 points): A brilliant effort from proprietor Denis Durantou, this classic Pomerol reveals a dark purple color as well as sweet aromas of raspberries, black cherries, cassis, and hints of caramel and vanilla. It is made in a layered, medium to full-bodied style with moderately high tannin, and superb concentration, structure, and depth. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025.

    2004 Vieux Chateau Certan - James Suckling, Wine Spectator (94 points): Fabulous aromas of crushed berries, vanilla and chocolate, with pure fruit. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. All in texture. A gorgeous and seductive young wine. This is 25 percent Cabernet Franc (normally it's 15 percent). Best after 2009. 4,585 cases made.

    Drawing its name from the Kettle Valley Railway, which traveled through the Naramata area on the east side of Okanagan Lake, the winery opened to the public in 1996. Kettle Valley Winery is known for its dark, intense and well-structured red wines, including this mini-vertical of three vintages (2006, 2007 and 2008) of Pinot Noir from the Hayman Vineyard. Dark colored red with sweet tomato and dried cherry notes on the effusive nose, there is some leather and earth too. Strawberry, cherry, raspberry and spice on the palate. Lingering silky finish.     Item #9 - Dinosaur Dig & Tour deVine Wines and Spirits












    A guided tour for two, to the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology. On a weekday, you will get to spend a day driving between Edmonton and Drumheller, Alberta, with Dr. Michael Caldwell, world-renowned vertebrate palaeontologist and Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta. The tour will depart Edmonton early in the morning, stopping for a little fossil hunting and a geology lesson in the spectacular gorge of the Red Deer River at Trochu Bridge Provincial Park.

    From there we will head to the Tyrrell Museum where Dr. Caldwell has arranged a backroom tour of the Museum, its collections, preparation laboratories and a meet and greet with staff. Dr. Caldwell will then lead a guided tour for the lucky couple through the Museum.     Item #12 - A Chateauneuf-du-Pape Duo deVine Wines and Spirits























    Chateauneuf-du-Pape (the Pope's red wine of choice) is about the only wine region in France that produces highly acclaimed wine where the prices are still relatively reasonable. High class Grenache based reds can be had for your cellar for around $100. Here are two of the very best, the ready to drink 2000 Clos des Papes, a favourite amongst the critics and noteworthy for not creating micro cuvees that cost a fortune, the focus is on a single wine - their regular bottling. This is showing well now. The second part of this duo is the 2004 Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Reservee from owner winemaker Laurence Feraud. She has produced in 2004 yet another Wine Spectator Top 100 Wine, this time landing at #12 for 2007. This is always a fabulous wine that drinks well starting at 10 years old. Both are exquisite additions to any collection.

    2000 Clos des Papes - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate (95 points): The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape reveals 14.6% alcohol, and is stylistically similar to the great 1990. The 2000 is open-knit and fat, with higher levels of glycerin as well as a more corpulent style than the structured, backward 2001. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by sweet, black cherry/kirsch liqueur-like notes presented in a voluptuous, full-throttle, intense style. It is already revealing such secondary nuances as pepper, garrigue, and truffles. Chewy, full-bodied, and moderately tannic, this cuvee is accessible, but not ready to drink. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.

    2004 Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Reservee - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (96 points, Wine Spectator's #12 Wine of the Year in 2007): A real powerhouse, with muscular layers of fig and black currant compote, backed by braised beef, chestnut, tobacco and tar flavors. The long, mesquite-filled finish lets additional bittersweet cocoa and dark fruit notes linger, with lots of garrigue. Best from 2008 through 2025. 5,000 cases made.

    Item #15 - A Bottle of 1997 Niepoort Vintage Port deVine Wines and Spirits























    Here is a future legend of a port from Niepoort, one of the best Vintage ports ever made at this esteemed estate. Very little of this came into Alberta, and nothing is left at the winery. A beast of a port that has the structure, grip, power and fruit to lasts many decades. Notes of coffee, dark extracted black forest fruit, ripe black figs, plums, prunes and nutmeg. Captivating minerality. One for the cellar and will be much treasured down the road.

    1997 Niepoort Vintage Port - James Suckling, Wine Spectator (96 points): hick and jammy, with loads of blackberry and plum character. Full, very sweet and round. Caresses your palate. Very fruit-driven, but lots of tannin structure as well. Sneaks up on you with the power. Was a bodybuilder, but now a long distance runner. Love it. '77/'85/'97 blind Port retrospective.     2008 is an excellent vintage for the famous Veneto based Amarone della Valpolicella reds. Here is a 3.0 Litre bottling (four regular sized bottles) of the 2008 Tommasi to be opened with lots of friends and family. Very aromatic, offering floral and berry character, with candied mocha fruit. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a dark chocolate, spice and dark fruit aftertaste. This could definitely sit for 3-5 years or a one hour decant. Pair with wild game in a fruit reduction sauce. Winemaker Giancarlo Tommasi crafts a wine of power and elegance unique to Tommasi Amarone. Tommasi Amarone is a wine which one can proudly serve on special occasions, particularly with red meats, game and ripe cheeses. But it can also be sipped an ideal companion to enjoyable conversation.     Item #30 - A Pair of 2008 Peter Lehmann Mentor Cabernet deVine Wines and Spirits




























    Two bottles of Peter Lehmann Mentor Cabernet Sauvignon, one of which is autographed by winemaker Ian Hongell, dedicated to the Zebra Child Protection Centre, who was here in Edmonton for a tasting earlier this month. For his style and skill as a winemaker, and for his backing of the Barossa and its growers, Peter Lehmann has come to be known by many as the "Mentor", hence the name of this red.

    The colour is deep with a dense centre. The nose has inviting aromas of classical Barossa Cabernet blackcurrant, dark chocolate & cedar box. The palate has a defined Cabernet cassis flavour, a touch of chocolate & vanilla, and shows a superb integration of oak and fruit.

    2001 is a legendary Brunello di Montalcino vintage, one for the ages. At eleven years of age, this is starting to hit its stride with some decanting (although it can hold for much longer). Here are three wines considered amongst the best of this vintage, and is worthy of a place in any serious collection. A not to be missed trio for lovers of the Sangiovese grape.

    2001 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva - Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate (95 points): Il Poggione's 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is likely to go down as one of the estate's modern day classics. Like the 1999, it too is made in a full-bodied style, but it offers greater elegance and finesse than its older sibling. There is superb purity to this wine, not to mention an eternal finish framed by silky, ripe tannins. A minimum of a few years of cellaring is called for to allow the French oak to integrate. The vintage saw a rainy winter followed by a freakish April frost which reduced yields in several vineyards. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2031.

    2001 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva - Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate (94 points): Pertimali's 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is vibrant and fresh, with compelling suggestions of violets, dark cherries, spices and minerals that emerge from the glass. It is a wine that possesses both massive amounts of fruit as well as imposing supporting structure. This refined, elegant, deeply-nuanced wine will need a few years to come together and I imagine it will still offer much pleasure at age 20. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021.

    2001 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino - James Suckling, Wine Spectator (97 points): Pure fruit here with lots of currant and berry. Full-bodied, with loads of fruit and velvety tannins. Long and delicious. Needs time. Best after 2009. 2,500 cases made.

    Item #61 - 2 Bottles of 2011 Cedar Creek Ehrenfelser deVine Wines and Spirits

























    The Ehrenfelser is the wine that made Cedar Creek Winery famous, and its production has been limited and for the last three years, Alberta has not received any at the retail level. Our special thanks to Nathalie Mulder of Freehouse Wines & Spirits, who has managed to snag us two bottles of the 2011 for the Al Fresco auction in support of the Zebra Child Protection Centre.

    Planted in 1977, the Ehrenfelser at Mannhardt Vineyards grows on some of the Okanagan's oldest vines. In 2002, an educated guess led to meticulously removal of leaves to open up the canopy and let the intense Okanagan sunlight reach the 25-year-old vines. A good wine became great and what the winery called "fruit salad in a glass" was born.

    The nose is of nectarines and fruit salad, the palate is of peaches, pears and more nectarines. Pair with a traditionally cooked turkey dinner.

    Given that the wine is not available in Alberta, we're expecting this item to go for much more than its $60 value at the winery.

Born in Drumheller on January 8, 1941, Raffaella died gracefully and bravely at The Grey Nuns Hospital in Edmonton on October 18, 2008. She was an energetic, enthusiastic mother delighting in showing her children the world and its gifts. Raffaella grew up in Drumheller, Alberta, married and raised her children in Wetaskiwin. She earned her Bachelor of Education and later her Master of Education in Art Education from the University of Alberta. She had a distinguished career with the Edmonton Public School Board for 30 years as teacher and Art Consultant, touching the lives of countless children and teachers. Raffaella taught in Lesoto and spent 3 years as a teacher for the Department of National Defense in Baden, Germany. In 2006 Raffaella received a Provincial Excellence in Teaching Award. She was a passionate and inspired teacher and her teaching inspired her own art, which enriches the lives of so many people. Raffaella was a painter, sculptor, singer, actress, writer and reader, a traveler, a fabulous cook, extraordinary hostess, a doer of good works, a faithful and loving friend. According to the experts at Keystone Art Gallery in Calgary, this is an unusually large work for Raffaella.

    Each year the esteemed French wine house Chateau Mouton-Rothschild chooses a master artist to create a label for their First Growth Bordeaux. The pricey wine has seen works by Picasso, Francis Bacon, Warhol and even Prince Charles graced the label. This 2007 vintage work features an artist with less name recognition but one whose work may be familiar. Bernar Venet is a French sculptor known for his curvy steel outdoor sculptures. His label features a sketch of a sculpture forming two graceful upward arcs. As is the custom, Venet was paid not in cash but in Mouton, 10 cases, half from 2007.
