Starting in , the first letter indicates the factory where it was manufactured and not the year. So the first letter, "U" from your L indicates canon the lens was made in Canon's Utsunomiya, Japan factory. The F indicats it is from , as is dating, BTW. Beats me what they all mean. With respect to the addition in of the second, leading alpha code, it doesn't appear to have been applied by Canon on their FD bodies.
