Weekly Online Offer for June 19/23

Our special this week is the 2018 Monte Antico Toscana (Tuscany, Italy) – $16.49, regularly $20.49.

Monte Antico, which means “ancient mountain”, is Neil and Maria Empson’s tribute to Tuscany. Their forty years of passion and experience led them to create their own label along with their good friend Franco Bernabei, a master in Italian winemaking. Together, they have made quite a name for themselves since 1977.

Our weekly special this week is their Monte Antico Rosso, a modern Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon offers refined floral, candied berry, cedar and ginger aromas with enough structure for short-term cellaring or pairing with food tonight. Great with spaghetti and meatballs, or with grilled lamb with mushroom risotto.

The grapes for this wine were grown in the areas of Maremma, Colline Pisane, and Colli Fiorentini. Soil types vary, but span from compact, very fine-textured limestone at 1,300-1,500 feet above sea level to a classic, clay and calcareous, rocky galestro around 1,300 feet above sea level, and go on to a clay, siliceous and calcareous soil at 820-990 feet above sea level. The grapes are harvested at their peak ripeness. This balanced combination of geological diversity makes for the wine’s consistent excellence. It is an easy everyday drinker, smooth and generous and drinking nicely.

Our special this week is the 2021 Domaine Houchart Rosé (Provence, France) – $19.49, regularly $23.99.

At the foot of the Sainte Victoire mountain, 15 kms from Aix en Provence in southern France in the commune of Puyloubier lies Domaine Houchart, purchased in 1890 by Aurélien Houchart, a negociant and friend of Cézanne and great-grand father of Geneviève Quiot (of Chateauneuf’s Domaine du Vieux Lazarat fame). This family estate has been farmed since the Roman times.

It is one of the largest estates (50 hectares under vine) in Provence with ancient old vines between 30 and 50 years. There is a wild range of soil types – sandy, chalky, clay and silt which ensures that the vines have proper drainage and produce and grapes that can develop true varietal characteristics.

Our feature this week is their classic Rosé (made from a blend of Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon) – it is a long time deVine Bestseller in the summer. It has a delicate citrus and strawberry nose that carry onto the palate and develop into flavours of field berries, watermelon and mineral notes. A quintessential provencal rosé (in an instantly recognizable glass bottle) that is clean and refreshing to be enjoyed as an aperitif with smoked salmon, charcuterie & cheeses as well as salads. Fabulous al fresco in the sun-drenched summer afternoons.

2021 Domaine Houchart Rosé (Provence, France) – $19.49, regularly $23.99.

2022 Bordeaux Futures Campaign – Final Call

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 5:47 pm

Author: Dirk Chan

It’s that time of the year again – Bordeaux Futures. How does Futures work you ask? – well at its most basic level, you’re purchasing unfinished wine – you pay for it in full now, and in two years time (2025), they arrive and you have some great Bordeaux to cellar for some time before enjoying the fruits of your patience. The wines when released in-bottle will be 10-15% higher so you get a price break. Nowadays, you buy futures so you can get your hands on a bottle or two of something great and rare. Bordeaux being one of the great wines in the world – at the top end, demand far out strips availability and Futures may be the only way of ensuring you get your hands on some of the more illustrious houses.

2022 is already being hailed as perhaps the greatest vintage of the new century. It is being mentioned in the same breath as 1947, 1982 and 1990 or a cross between 2009 and 2010. It is being called an “Investor’s vintage”, where they think in the years to come, this vintage will become highly sought after by all and appreciate in value significantly. It was a hot vintage throughout, but with better know-how as to how to handle that (since the very hot 2003), the winemakers have produce something unique and rare, a uniformly great vintage for all the red grapes – thus no one region dominated.

I tasted a barrel sample from our friend Marc Vigneron (who sells most of the right bank Bordeaux to us) of Ch. Bouscaut in Pessac, and I was amazed at the great nose, concentrated fruit but above all a fabulously fresh, long and cashmere finish – if this was indicative of how even a moderate house can produce something this good…wow! He said there were record levels of people attending the En Primeur tastings in Bordeaux, so world wide interest is high.

Already we’ve seen from the early releases, a 15-30% increase in price over the 2021’s and even over the 2018 pricing, so at the high end, things will not be cheap and already with the Leoville Barton we see it is in high demand selling out very quickly irregardless of price. Do grab what you can afford, the Petit Chateaux will show well young, and the Grand Cru’s will deliver a unique experience in 20 years.

For those seeking the absolute top-tier, please drop us an email so we can help. It gets harder and harder every year to get the highest scoring most prestigious wines, some wines we get one 3pack. Of course, there isn’t enough to go around as every retailer wants some of the superstars leading to some frenzied buying and quick sellouts and staying up all night waiting for new releases/offers for a whole month.

As usual, items offered will be sold on a first-come first served basis and in some cases maximums applied. In many instances we won’t be able to go back for more of something once it sells out and if we do, price will be second tranche (release) higher pricing.

Please use the link below to subscribe to receive Futures offerings. If you’ve purchased Futures before, you are automatically enrolled. Subscribers can expect two offerings per week over 3 or 4 weeks beginning next week, the campaign will end early to mid June.

As usual, we’ll be offering some sweet Sauternes, whites, but this time around mostly focused on reds from Petit Chateaux to high end Grand Cru’s at various price points so there will be wines for everybody. Bottom line, if you’ve been hesitant to get into the Bordeaux Futures game, jump in now for this is a historically significant vintage to have in your cellars.

***All wines have been released and we are done our buying. This is the last call so its time to finalize all purchases. Don’t miss out on this “buy-all-you-can-afford can’t go wrong vintage”. The campaign closes midnight Thursday, July 6th. Thank you everybody for your participation.

Our special this week is the Cecchi Chianti Riserva DOCG (Tuscany, Italy) – $20.99, regularly $25.99.

The love story of Luigi and Anita Cecchi began in Poggibonsi, Tuscany in the 1950s, when Luigi saw Anita whizz past on her motor scooter. Intrigued by such an adventurous woman, he pursued and married her. Together, they poured their hearts and souls into the Cecchi Winery in Tuscany.

The story of Cecchi actually dates back to 1893, when Luigi’s grandfather – also Luigi – took his experience from working at some of the most famous agricultural companies in Tuscany and set out on his own as a wine merchant.

Over the years, their house reputation is built around their Chianti Classico’s of elegance and finesse. Nowadays, their two sons, Cesare and Andrea are now at the company’s helm, as the commercial director and the production and technical director, respectively. Inheriting the same enthusiasm and entrepreneurial know-how of their forefathers, they are focused on sustainability and their wine’s ability to express its territory of origin.

Cecchi wines are a pure expression of their Tuscan terroir and crafted to be enjoyed around the family dinner table and our weekly special, their Chianti Classico Riserva certainly fits the bill with a glowing deep garnet color with glints of copper, the nose on this Chianti Riserva starts with dark cherry fruit, subtle gun flint and sage followed on the palate by a woodsy spice note and fine acid structure all leading to a smooth and balanced finish – this is a versatile wine to serve at the dinner table.

Cecchi Chianti Riserva DOCG (Tuscany, Italy) – $20.99, regularly $25.99.

Our special this week is the 2021 Vinos Santa Ema Select Terroir Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva (Maipo Valley, Chile) – $14.99, regularly $18.99.

The Viña Santa Ema vineyards is well situated for winemaking. Located 10 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, its coastal cool-climite vineyards have maximum temperatures of 24-25 degrees in summer, but with lots of wind and sun that results in wines with great aromatic expression, with high acidity and a great presence of ripe fresh fruit without greenish touches. Their philosphy of joining tradition and modernity is admirable and resulting in more and more international recognition as a final value winery.

The ripening of the berries here is slow, resulting in vibrant, mineral white wines alongside complex, aromatic reds like our weekly special this week – their certified sustainable Select Terroir Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva – an intense ruby red color with delicate aromas of black and red fruit like plum, blackberry, and raspberry with a hint of toast. The wine is very well balanced on the palate, with a long finish. It’s ideal for red meats, well spiced dishes, stews, and cheeses.

Clos du Soleil – Tasting This Thursday

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 2:59 pm

Author: Dirk Chan

Since 2006, Clos du Soleil is a small artisan winery and estate vineyard on the Upper Bench of the South Similkameen Valley, in British Columbia. The house style is one of Old World elegance and New World edge which are elegant, complex, and age-worthy. Founded by a small group of friends, they own estate vineyards which are arid, hot, with a desert-like climate, with rocky, mineral-rich soils that produce truly distinctive wines of ripe fruit character, fresh acidity, herbal notes and striking minerality.

The winemaking team uses traditional winemaking techniques, informed by research, while adhering to the philosophies of minimal-interventionist winemaking, and organic and biodynamic viticulture. The resulting wines borrow an aesthetic derived from the great chateaux of Bordeaux, but are stamped with the flavours and aromas of their terroir.

The name Clos du Soleil, a French term meaning an enclosed Vineyard of the Sun, refers to the rocks, soil, and sun, which together define this very special piece of land where the grapes grow. The name also highlights the long days of sun which pour in on the Similkameen Bench, one of BC’s most unique and promising microclimates.

Please join us on Thursday, June 1 @ 7pm as deVine welcomes winemaker, general manager, and co-owner Michael Clark for a stand-up tasting. He was originally trained in Theoretical Physics, then followed a career in investment management in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Obsessed with wine from a young age, Michael gained training in winemaking in Geneva, Switzerland, and Bordeaux, France, followed by the winemaking program from the University of California, Davis.

Author: Dirk Chan

Our online feature this week is the 2021 Les Quatre Tours Classique Rosé (Provence, France) – $19.49 (regularly $23.99).

Les Quatre Tours came into existence in 1924 at a time when many cooperatives were born just after the 1st World War. Located in the town of Venelles in Southern France, it operated as a very typical village co-op until the end of the 20th century, where the locals went with their jerry cans in order to “refuel” from the large tanks and then bottle the wines at home. Most of the wine was sold in bulk to bigger negociants; nothing was put in bottle at the co-op. In the 1990s, facing a very different and declining market for cheap, bulk wines, they decided to completely change the direction of the co-op. The idea was to model themselves after a small, quality “winery.” with quality over quantity – that’s the philosophy that’s carried forward to even now.

Our weekly special this week is their Classique Rosé – light, shimmering orange, salmon pink in color. The nose offers lively red strawberry, tangerine, watermelon and floral qualities on the fragrant nose. Silky and open-knit on the easy to enjoy palate, showing good depth to its juicy strawberry, red cherry, pineapple and orange pith flavors. The touch of spiciness on the lingering, dry, detailed finish ending long with a subtle hint of fennel and minerality typical of the region. Nice acidity encourages another sip.

40% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Cinsault, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Rolle. Classified Vegan friendly.
