Our online feature this week is the 2021 Henry of Pelham Baco Noir Old Vines (Ontario – Niagara, Canada) – $22.99, regularly $27.99.

The Niagara estate Henry of Pelham was established in 1988 with their first vintage. At that time, they were one of very few estate wineries dedicated to producing premium quality wines made from 100% Ontario-grown grapes. Now into its sixth generation, the reputation of this winery is well established for its sustainable grape growing, terroir driven quality and decades of serious dedication.

The Baco Noir is a pseudo defacto Canadian standard (along with Marachal Foch), its something we can call is Canadian (though its a French and American genetic blend) and the Henry of Pelham is a recognized leader in its production. Our weekly special is their Old Vines Baco Noir, it has a little bit more of everything than the normale version. Blackberry, plum, blueberry and pepper on the beguiling nose. More berries and dark fruit on the extended concentrated palate, and a long spicy finish. Pair this Niagara icon with a rich, elevated poutine or grilled lamb or venison. You can even cellar this for improvement over the next 2-3 years as well. Prost everyone!

Tequila is a distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila 65 km (40 mi) northwest of Guadalajara, and in the Jaliscan Highlands (Los Altos de Jalisco) of the central western Mexican state of Jalisco.

The red volcanic soils are well suited for growing of the blue agave, and more than 300 million of the plants are harvested every year. Agave grows differently depending on the region. Blue agaves grown in the highlands Los Altos region are larger and sweeter in aroma and taste. Agaves harvested in the valley region have a more herbaceous fragrance and flavor. Due to its historical and cultural importance, the region near Tequila was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006.

Tequila is made in specific regions of Mexico and must be made from only blue agave (agave tequilana), whereas its brother Mezcal can be made from a wide variety of agave.

The taste of tequila will vary depending on where the agave was grown as well as the age of tequila. Blanco tequilas, which are bottled soon after distilling have an earthy yet sweet flavour. Reposado tequila is more mellow than Blanco and has a soft oak flavour. Whereas Anejo Tequila, which is aged for the longest has a dark colour with a smooth balance between agave and oak flavours.

As with tequila, the taste of Mezcal will vary depending on where the agave was grown as well as the age of the spirit. There is much more variation in the flavour of Mezcal compared to tequila due the fact that tequila is made from only blue agave and Mezcal can be made from up to 30 different agaves. With an overall smokey flavour, Mezcal can also have floral, fruity and earthy notes.

Below are some Tequila recommendations. Enjoy!

Our online feature this week is the Poderi di Luigi Einaudi Dogliani Dolcetto (Piedmont, Italy) – $21.49, regularly $26.99.

Luigi Einaudi is arguably the best producer of Dolcetto in Italy, with their reputation going back to 1897, who was to became the 2nd President of the Italian Republic. The winery is based in the village of Dogliani but also has owns prestigious vineyards in Barolo and Barbaresco. The estate is now run by Einaudi’s great-grandson, Matteo Sardagna who continues the excellence in their entire range of wines.

In the Dogliani area, the Dolcetto wine reaches its absolute best – with eight months of maturation in steel and concrete tanks and two months in glass complete the refinement. Of a dry and moderately acidic taste, after a year of ageing, it has a good body and a full palate.

Our feature this week is their famous Dogliani Dolcetto made from 90 year old vines, the annual production is 130.000 bottles. Ruby red in color, with a fruity bouquet with hints of undergrowth. Fresh and flavorful on the palate, with abundant red berry fruit front and center and a dry almond finish. Its easy to drink and makes for a great everyday red. It pairs well with starters and first courses like pasta, risotto and soup. Great with vegetable or meat salads, pasta with or without tomato or ragout.

We believe the best Dolcetto’s come from Dogliani and this wine is a testament to that.

Our online feature this week is the 2020 Savian Wines Quota 7 Cabernet Franc (Veneto, Italy) – $17.99, regularly $21.99.

Savian Wines is a certified organic winery located in Venezia, Veneto in northern Italy where early in the last century, where the estate now stands, the land was a never ending expanse of oak woods.. The grapes are grown organically in the Sylvoz method, made famous by a local Italian winemaker Carlo Sylvoz where canes of up to, say, ten buds in length are tied to a wire below a high cordon of about 1m leaving the buds quite high off the ground dangling downward.

Our wine of the week is their Cabernet Franc, a medium-bodied red to pair with a grilled venison or beef stew or by itself. It strikes the eye for its intense ruby red color with a tint of purple, the nose has a certain herbaceousness with hints of wild flower. The palate offers intense red spectrum fruits, nicely ripe and balanced with blackberry, thyme and a touch of dill finishing with a spicy lick. Not often do you find a CabFranc from Italy, this certified sustainable and Vegan friendly red is both elegant and harmonious at a low 12.5% ABV.

2022 Bordeaux Futures – Final Call

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 12:33 pm

bord_22_recs_small2
Author: Dirk Chan

It’s that time of the year again – Bordeaux Futures. How does Futures work you ask? – well at its most basic level, you’re purchasing unfinished wine – you pay for it in full now, and in two years time (2025), they arrive and you have some great Bordeaux to cellar for some time before enjoying the fruits of your patience. The wines when released in-bottle will be 10-15% higher so you get a price break. Nowadays, you buy futures so you can get your hands on a bottle or two of something great and rare. Bordeaux being one of the great wines in the world – at the top end, demand far out strips availability and Futures may be the only way of ensuring you get your hands on some of the more illustrious houses.

2022 is already being hailed as perhaps the greatest vintage of the new century. It is being mentioned in the same breath as 1947, 1982 and 1990 or a cross between 2009 and 2010. It is being called an “Investor’s vintage”, where they think in the years to come, this vintage will become highly sought after by all and appreciate in value significantly. It was a hot vintage throughout, but with better know-how as to how to handle that (since the very hot 2003), the winemakers have produce something unique and rare, a uniformly great vintage for all the red grapes – thus no one region dominated.

I tasted a barrel sample from our friend Marc Vigneron (who sells most of the right bank Bordeaux to us) of Ch. Bouscaut in Pessac, and I was amazed at the great nose, concentrated fruit but above all a fabulously fresh, long and cashmere finish – if this was indicative of how even a moderate house can produce something this good…wow! He said there were record levels of people attending the En Primeur tastings in Bordeaux, so world wide interest is high.

Already we’ve seen from the early releases, a 15-30% increase in price over the 2021’s and even over the 2018 pricing, so at the high end, things will not be cheap and already with the Leoville Barton we see it is in high demand selling out very quickly irregardless of price. Do grab what you can afford, the Petit Chateaux will show well young, and the Grand Cru’s will deliver a unique experience in 20 years.

For those seeking the absolute top-tier, please drop us an email so we can help. It gets harder and harder every year to get the highest scoring most prestigious wines, some wines we get one 3pack. Of course, there isn’t enough to go around as every retailer wants some of the superstars leading to some frenzied buying and quick sellouts and staying up all night waiting for new releases/offers for a whole month.

As usual, items offered will be sold on a first-come first served basis and in some cases maximums applied. In many instances we won’t be able to go back for more of something once it sells out and if we do, price will be second tranche (release) higher pricing.

Please use the link below to subscribe to receive Futures offerings. If you’ve purchased Futures before, you are automatically enrolled. Subscribers can expect two offerings per week over 3 or 4 weeks beginning next week, the campaign will end early to mid June.

As usual, we’ll be offering some sweet Sauternes, whites, but this time around mostly focused on reds from Petit Chateaux to high end Grand Cru’s at various price points so there will be wines for everybody. Bottom line, if you’ve been hesitant to get into the Bordeaux Futures game, jump in now for this is a historically significant vintage to have in your cellars.

***All wines have been released and we are done our buying. This is the last call so its time to finalize all purchases. Don’t miss out on this “buy-all-you-can-afford can’t go wrong vintage”. The campaign closes midnight Thursday, July 6th. Thank you everybody for your participation.
