Introducing the “Best Bang for the Buck Case”

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 3:22 pm

Author: Dirk Chan

Usually in early December, we would be having two in-store sessions of the Best Bang for the Buck Tasting, a festive event where we taste 8 wines that we think represents the best value for the money for the year. With Covid, this hasn’t happened for two years now, so instead we thought this year we would introduce instead the Best Bang for the Buck Case where you can purchase the 8 wines that we would have served up, at home. We’ll offer the case with the same 10% discount as would have been in the store tasting. These eight wines surely over-deliver for the price point – we hope you’ll enjoy these. Plus as an added treat, you can optionally fill up the case with 4 extra bottles of any wine or spirit of your own choosing and we’ll give you 10% on those as well!

Note: Available starting Wed, Dec 1

Here are my brief notes for the eight wines in the case:

1) Gorgo Chardonnay – gorgeous un-oaked Chardonnay – great purity of fruit and long length. Not for lovers of Cali Chard, but wonderful texture.

2) Romain Duvernay Cotes-du-Rhone Blanc – never had a Cotes-du-Rhone Blanc this good for this kind of pricing. The classic character of oily texture, stone fruits, nuts and pear all shine through.

3) Oisly Thesee Les Bremailles Gamay – beautiful light red to go with turkey and ham – lovely currant and raspberry edge to the soft tannin-ed finish.

4) Bodegas de Moya Gloria Monastrell – delightful Valencia red that is spicy galore with a touch of earth and soil character on the blackberry and rhubarb base.

5) Potentino Sacromontino Sangiovese – a marvel for a young 2020 Sangiovese. Unusual beer cap enclosure and unusual 1.0L bottle – you get a lot of wine for the money. An amazingly wonderful mouthfeel for something this young. Great with pasta or pizza.

6) Ouled Thaleb Cabernet Grenache – A Moroccan red that allows the Cabernet (structure, cassis) and the Grenache (violets) to all come through. If you’ve never had a Moroccan red, this is a great way to sample. Do some kebobs with it.

7) d’Andezon Cotes-du-Rhone Villages Signargues – we always have one wine outside the $20 price point, and this is the selection for this year. Outstanding wine in so many ways – its classic GSM Rhone style but with the extra “je nais sais quoi” – plum, leather, earth, chocolate, you name it, its got it.

8) Merayo Mencia Tinto – the last vintge of this Spanish red was quite earthy and barn-yardy but this vintage is not. Made from 80-100 year old bush vines – blueberries, mushrooms and great length.

Best Bang for the Buck Case – $157.95

Our online feature this week is the 2018 Fonteroutoli Mazzei Chianti Classico (Tuscany – Chianti, Italy) – $29.99, regularly $36.99.

The hamlet of Fonterutoli, an old bastion of Florence a few kilometers from Castellina in Chianti, is blessed with an extraordinary view of Siena, which is so very close that it is possible to discern the Torre del Mangia and the outline of the Duomo. Time stopped here, maintaining the charm of the Middle Ages.

This Chianti Classico is made from grapes grown from 120 different company parcels and 7 different vineyard sites with an altitude varying from 220 – 570m above sea level. Spread across a unique range of soil and climate types, this red showcases the Chianti Classico region. It is the flagship and the “Best Seller” of the company, a benchmark for the whole category of Chianti Classico.

The 2018 is a well proportioned red with an elegant body, dark berries, fresh spice flavors, intense finishing with smooth taste. Great to pair with dark sauced pastas, BBQ, boiled meats with spicy sauces, aged cold cuts. Enjoy!

weekly_vina_real_reserva_small2

Our online feature this week is the 2015 Cune Viña Real Reserva (Rioja, Spain) – $27.99, regularly $34.99.

Viña Real is CVNE’s Rioja Alavesa-based winery, releasing its first vintage in 1920. The Viña Real style is one that showcases the forward fruit of Alavesa while simultaneously possessing the structure to age. The original fruit source was in the Elciego area, in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa region. The vineyards are located adjacent and clustered around the old Camino Rea (“Royal Road”), from which the wine takes its name.

Nowadays, the grapes are principally sourced from sunny south-facing slopes which run from the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range down to the Ebro River. As is also the case with the Cune line, the Viña Real wines are produced from over 50% estate fruit, an unusually high percentage for Rioja.

A new facility for Viña Real was completed in 2004 – it is situated on top of the hill known as Cerro de la Mesa and commands sweeping views of both the Alavesa vineyards and the town of Logroño (where we stayed during our last trip here), Rioja’s commercial center. If the Cune bodega represents CVNE’s commitment to the old and the traditional, the Viña Real bodega demonstrates their forward-thinking philosophy and their embrace of modern technology.

We featured their Crianza a few weeks ago, and this week, we feature their Reserva from the great 2015 vintage. A modern style of Rioja, it is medium-full bodied red sourced from sunny, south-facing slopes in Rioja Alavesa. Look for aromas of cherries, raspberries, vanilla and mineral hints. Its medium bodied solid juicy blue and red fruits has a clovey edge finishing with zingy acidity. I recommend a half hour decant and pair with a well-spiced chickpea stew.

2018 Jadot Celebration Beaune 1er Cru

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 8:45 pm

This is the 4th release of the Jadot’s Beaune 1er Cru 150th Anniversary now renamed to the Celebration moniker . This 2018 version is sumptuous and already drinking nicely. All of the four editions tend to drink earlier than their single vineyard bottlings.

I remember tasting the first release, the excellent 2009, which was followed by 2012, 2015 and now the 2018. It is an assemblage of numerous Beaune climats that Jadot owns, it has always been an incredibly expressive and flat-out delicious Pinot to be enjoyed with friends and relatives at a celebratory dinner

This special cuvée is made only in great years, and 2018 while a hot vintage, comes up as surprisingly fresh and lively and very fine in the Beaune region. It comes in its own designer label, separate from the customary Jadot labels. Giving the frost turmoil that happened earlier this year that destroyed a lot of vineyards all over Europe (including Burgundy), the prices of existing Burgundies on the market or upcoming are all going to increase so this a relative bargain and is actually cheaper than the last 2015 release. Burgundy lovers take notice!

Our special this week is the 2020 Uko Estate Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) – $11.99 (regularly $14.99)

The UKO winery was built in the 1930s. It is a boutique and traditional winery, with the latest technology to achieve outstanding results. Their high altitude vineyards are located in one of the more prestigious sub-areas of the Uco Valley, the Pareditas sub-region, this is an inexpensive and exciting red that confirms the shift in grape growing over a century, from East Mendoza to the classic zone to Uco Valley. The soil is alluvial and drip irrigation is used. The dry and continental climate with fine sun exposure allows for perfect grape ripening. We featured their 2019 previously.
