The Return of Soalheiro

Quinta de Soalheiro is located in Melgaco, the northermost part Portgual’s Vinho Verde wine region. Established in 1974 by Joao Antonio Cerdeira, it is now on the third generation of winemakers, making wines using the Alvarinho grape. The house is also famous for producting the first sparking Alvarinho in 1995.

It’s been 7 years since we got any wines from Soalheiro, during which time we’ve had to go to Lisbon to enjoy a glass or two. So, we’re very happy for its return of these award winning whites (produced from 14 hectares of organically farmed vineyard) to the Alberta market. again, this time with its 2023 vintage. As usual, extremely limited availability and will be sold out in a jiff.

Agricola San Felice is steeped in local lore and history. Named after a local early Christian Saint from the 18th century, the property was bought by the Grisaldi Del Taja family – the founding members of the Chianti Classico consortium. The family produced wine for several centuries until 1968 when the estate passed to Enzo Morganti, where he restructured and transformed this venerable estate, concentrating on high quality winemaking, systematic scientific research and thoughtful vineyard purchases, which included the Campogiovanni vineyard in Montalcino in 1984. Today the property includes a 1,853 acre resort, 445 acres of vineyards and a 44 acre parcel dedicated to experimental viticulture and genetic improvement of Sangiovese. The winery makes regular appearances in the Wine Spectator’s Top 100.

The San Felice vineyards are situated amongst the gently rolling hills of the Castelnuovo Berardenga area of Chianti Classico. The winery’s annual production is around one million bottles (1,025,000 of Chianti, 80,000 of Brunello, 40,000 of Rosso di Montalcino and 55,000 of Bolgheri), divided into 16 labels, made entirely from estate-owned grapes.

Our feature this week is their Chianti Classico, a delightfully aromatic (violets) Sangiovese based wine which includes some Pugnitello – an ancient Tuscan grape that was nearly extinct when San Felice began working with it in the late 1980s. This Chianti Classico is smooth, expressive, pure and characterful, with black cherry, raspberry, blackcurrant, earth, tobacco, and a precise minerality. Harmonious, dry and long with fine structure and fresh acidity – it’s ideal choice with charcuterie, roast turkey or grilled beef.

Our online feature this week is the The Ned Marisco Vineyards Pinot Gris (Marlborough, New Zealand) – $17.49 regularly $21.99.

The Ned represents the vibrant diversity that is so prevalent in the Marlborough wine-growing region in the Northeast of the South Island. One of Marlborough’s famous peaks, The Ned mountain served as the playground for founder, Brent Marris to express his grassroots winemaking that places the energy and liveliness of this grand adventure in every bottle made. The Marisco Vineyards are located in the Waihopai Valley, a location which provides a near perfect environment for producting wines of great character.

Our feature this week is their Marisco Vineyards Pinot Gris, a delightfully aromatic white featuring bright florals and ripe aromas of white peach, poached pears, baked apples, green mangoes and honeydew with hints of baking spice. The harmonious palate is fresh and full of flavour (no doubt due to the extended contact of the juice with the grape skins prior to pressing). This is a delicious example of cool climate Marlborough Pinot Gris (much like their Sauvignon Blanc which we featured a couple of months back). Try pairing with chicken, fish, pasta dishes, even Dim Sum.

Rioja Tasting – David Piera of Cune

The history of Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España began back in 1879 (making them one of the oldest wineries in Spain) at this winery in the famous Barrio de la Estación train station in the town of Haro. It is certainly on the short list of Rioja’s greatest traditional producers. Over more than 140 years, it has continued to grow around the Aldea del Vino (Wine Village), a sunny courtyard flanked by unique stone buildings with ceramic tile roofs, which has become the central hub of CVNE.

The first wine produced by CVNE took the name of the company’s initials. However, a simple and fortunate spelling error, confusing the V with a U, led to the creation of the now iconic Cune brand, now one of the leading wineries on the national market. The winery expanded its facilities in 2019, coinciding with its 140th anniversary and marking its continued commitment to producing the finest quality white, rosé and its various levels of red wines ranging from Crianzas to Gran Reserva’s.

deVine and Pacific Wines & Spirits welcome Export Director David Piera on Wednesday, Oct 23 @7pm as he leads us through seven wines that showcase the main Cune line of wines and two others – the famous single vineyard wines of Contino (established as one of the first single vineyard sites in all of Spain in 1973) as well as Vina Real (established in 1920 as a long ager, rounder and powerful side of Rioja Alevesa). The highlight will be a Cune Imperial Gran Reserva.

Discovering Some Interesting Italian Whites

There ares some very interesting white wines coming out of Italy these days, made from native grapes that a lot of us haven’t heard of or tasted before or acquainted with. Pecorino, Verdicchio, Falanghina, Grillo, Trebbiano and Catarratto are not exactly household names or the rather more famous international grapes. Thought we’d highlight some for you – both interesting and worthy of consideration and wonderful on the dining table. If you’re in an adventurous mode, look no further.

Our online feature this week is the Sottano Junior Red Blend (Mendoza, Argentina) – $16.99 regularly $20.99.

Sottano was founded in 1890 by Fioravante Sottano who settled in Mendoza after moving from Italy. Situated in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, in Perdriel, in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina, it covers over two hectares of land, including 15,000 square meters of landscaping using only native species.

The winery produces about 800,000 liters of wine annually. In a fully automated process, the wines are distributed in stainless steel tanks of different sizes, which allows us to maintain precise quality control. Their underground cellar stores their best wines during their aging in oak barrels and later in the bottle.

Our feature this week is their Junior Red Blend, an unoaked red made from 60% Malbec, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It is an everyday drinker, with a floral component, black fruited plums and raspberries leading to an easy-going palate with mouth-filling fruit, elegant tannins and smooth mouthfeel. Try with BBQ meats.

Whites & Pinks

Whites with a touch of sweetness is preferred because of the sweetness of some of the fixings – candied yams, cranberry sauce, and honey for the glazed ham. A completely dry white will seem more austere and void of fruit due to the sweetness of the food so I recommend Rieslings (dry or off-dry, both work), sweet Chenin Blancs or other Germanic or Alsace varietals. Having said that, some will always go with a dry creamy Chardonnay irregardless and that’s perfectly fine. Also, don’t forget that rosés work really well too!

Our online feature this week is the Bodegas Atalaya Laya (Almansa, Spain) – $17.99 regularly $21.49.

For over a century (first established in 1916), the Viñas Familia Gil has farmed in Jumilla, Spain (just south of Valencia). With the patience given to the land of their ancestors, they take care of their old vineyards, and they grow with the incorporation of small wineries from the main wine producing regions of Spain including Castilla y León, Montsant and Priorat, Calatayud, Rueda, Almansa and Rías Baixas. Today, all of the wineries under Gil Family Estates are run by brothers, Miguel and Ángel Gil.

There are several brands of wines produced – bringing together ten different artisanal vineyards, taking small-production philosophy and giving it great exposure, at an attractive price point.

Our feature this week is from one of these estates, their Bodegas Atalaya Laya Red, a blend of Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrell flourish. As if they were enchanted, the old vines seem to like these low-fertile limestone soils suffering from scarce rainfalls. Located at an altitude between 700-1000 metres, they produce concentrated fruits that give a burst of varietal characteristics, flavours and aromas. Their climate (often hot summers and long, cold winters, with a regular difference of 25 ºC between day and night temperatures) gives a full-bodied red with fine maturity and concentration. Pleasant and fresh palate, balanced with sweet tannins, unctuous and enveloping with a unique mid-palate and long finish. Ideal to accompany with game meat and creamy rice dishes, stewed legumes, mushrooms, game and poultry, casseroles, fish and seafood sauce, smoked, cured and blue cheeses, grilled and roasted white and red meats.
