Our feature this week is their 2019 Château Ste. Michelle Riesling (Washington – Columbia Valley, United States) – $15.99 (regularly $19.99).

Founded in 1967, Chateau Ste. Michelle is Washington’s oldest and most acclaimed winery featuring award-winning wines and unparalleled tasting experiences at our historic chateau located in Woodinville, Washington, near Seattle.

The wineries’ roots go all the way back to the Repeal of Prohibition circa 1912 when the estate was owned by Seattle lumber baron Frederick Stimson.

Most famous for its Riesling production, the winery makes over 8 million bottles of the various Rieslings annually. This everyday drinker has some sweetness to it, but not overly sweet.

Winemaker’s Notes: “Chateau Ste. Michelle Columbia Valley Riesling is a blend of Riesling from throughout Washington’s Columbia Valley. The wine offers crisp apple aromas and flavors with subtle mineral notes. This is Chateau Ste. Michelle’s “everyday Riesling” that is a pleasure to drink and easy to match with a variety of foods.”

2020 Bordeaux Futures – Last Call

Our highly successful 2020 Bordeaux Futures Campaign will come to a close at midnight this coming Sunday, July 18. This is your last-call to order some 2020 Bordeaux from the so-called Covid vintage to have and open 10-20 years from now and say we lived through it.

For only the 2nd time ever, Bordeaux has had a trio of great years – 2018, 2019 and now 2020. The last and only other time this occurred was 1988, 89 and 1990.

How does Futures work you ask – well at its most basic level, you’re purchasing unfinished wine – you pay for it in full now, and in two years time, they arrive and you have some great Bordeaux to cellar for some time before enjoying the fruits of your patience. The wines when bottled will be 10-15% higher so you get a price break. Nowadays, you buy futures so you can get your hands on a bottle or two of something great and rare. Bordeaux being one of the great wines in the world – at the top end, demand far out strips availability and Futures may be the only way of ensuring you get your hands on some illustrious houses.

2020 appears to be a Right Bank vintage, so the Merlot dominant appellations of St. Emilion and Pomerol will be highly sought after while Margaux and Haut-Medoc’s with high percentage of Merlot are also popular.

The pricing appears to be an increase of a few percent to 15%, thus a little more expensive than the giveaway pricing from last year, but still quite a bit cheaper than 2018. However, given that yields were down in general 20%, we are receiving less quantity than normal.

As usual, items offered will be sold on a first-come first served basis and in some cases maximums applied. In many cases we won’t be able to go back for more of something once it sells out and if we do, price will be second tranche (release) pricing.

If you require assistance in choosing, please don’t hesitate to drop us an email or come into the store and we’d be happy to help.

Our special this week is the 2019 Dubard Château Laulerie Viognier (Bergerac, France) – $17.27 (regularly $22.99)

In the late 1970’s, the Dubard family founded their first wine estate, Château Laulerie, in the western part of the Bergerac wine region called Montravel. Throughout the years, the family restored life to two additional wineries located on the right bank of the Dordogne river, in the wine appellations of Lalande de Pomerol and Puisseguin St Emilion.

With its dry white, rosé and red wines, Château Laulerie offers the unique harmony resulting from the alliance between a contrasted but mild climate and a complex calcareous soil. Only planted in 2016, Chateau Laulerie’s signature Viognier began to unveil its personality by the 2019 vintage, fully expressing its three most sought-after qualities; tension, glycerin texture, minerality and aromatic maturity.

With a nose signalling perfumed honeysuckle, gently stewed apricots and pear, on the palate the trademark Viognier characteristics can be found, namely a fleshy and round vivacity and flavours of ripe peach, apricot and mango with a refined oily finish.

Great as an apéritif, it can also make a great companion to an avocado crab salad or a meaty fish like monkfish.

July is Petit Chablis month as several boutique stores around town promote and create awareness of this fine Chardonnay AOC region. While Petit Chablis is within the Chablis AOC, covering all areas not included in the Chablis Village wines, the Premier Cru’s and the Grand Cru’s – it is a source of great, easy to enjoy Chardonnays for early drinking that speaks of the terroir that it came from.

There’s nothing really “little” or “lesser” about b>Petit Chablis, it is a Village designation that makes up around 18-20% of all wines made in Chablis, it is mostly spans the higher slopes or the beginning of the plateau in hard limestone or silty soils and of course, younger vines. The textures are light and full of verve, light straw in color with lovely minerality, green apples and gunflint – a great drink in the summer in your back yard.

The promotion this month includes a draw to win two bottles of Petit Chablis, a charcuterie board from The Butchery by RGE RD and to participate in a Zoom Virtual tasting with Barb Philip, MW and Gurvinder Bhatia, organizer of this event and Quench editor-in-chief on Thursday, August 26th. Our special this week is the 2018 Cellar Masroig Sola Fred Montsant – $14.25 (regularly $18.99)

Montsant’s Cellar Masroig (“red farm”) co-op was founded in 1918, and today is a fine example of how a co-operative could and should be ran. Located near Barcelona in NE Spain, this wine is made from the Samso (Carignan) grape grown over red clay and limestone, and fermented in stainless to preserve freshness. The Mediterranean climate and continental influences, with dry summers, poor soil fertility of terrain and mountainous landscape all leave their mark on this lovely wine. This lighter red offers lifted red currant, raspberry, wild plum across a light palate, with finely grippy tannins, and a touch of mineral salinity. Chill slightly and enjoy all summer long.
