Our online feature this week is the Jim Barry The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon (Coonawarra, Australia) – $16.99, regularly $20.99.

Jim Barry Wines’ philosophy to winemaking is to own the vineyards to develop the best fruit flavours possible and retain these flavours during winemaking. Over the last 60 years the family has worked to establish a mosaic of sites – 17 vineyards covering 320 hectares in the Clare Valley and two vineyards covering 35 hectares in the Coonawarra.

On the southern boundary of Coonawarra (famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon) is the old Penola cricket ground, which first saw a ball bowled in anger and the flashing cover drives of the local champions of 1950. The cricket ground was retired in 1996. The following year, Cabernet Sauvignon was planted on the 30-acre property. The original pavilion and pitch have been retained, thus preserving an important piece of Coonawarra sporting history. Fruit from this vineyard, along with selected parcels of fruit from their owned Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Clare Valley have been blended to produce our weekly offer this week – the Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon.

It is a rich, soft and approachable red, great for an everyday drinker. Classic Cabernet notes of dark berry compote and dark cherry combine with nuances of olive leaf with lifted red florals. The palate is lively with bright red blackberry and dark cherry fruit. The wine has an fine balance throughout the palate with fine tannins and a moreish, minty finish with slight touches of eucalyptus. Pair with grilled meats. This is a fine bargain at regular price, but on sale, its a steal of a deal.

2018 Jim Barry The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon (Coonawarra, Australia) – $16.99 (regularly $20.99)

Our online feature this week is the Sottano Merlot (Mendoza, Argentina) – $14.99 (regularly $20.99).

Bodega Sottano was founded in 2002 by Sottano family. The family history with the wines began at the end of the 19th Century when Don Fioravante Sottano came from Veneto, Italy and he established in Mendoza.

The winery and main vineyard are located in one of the most exclusive regions of Mendoza for producing high quality grapes and wines – Perdriel is a little district inside Luján de Cuyo located 30 km away from Mendoza City. With the majestic Andes Mountains watching their grapes growing daily, their 25 acres of Merlot and Malbec grapes of 30 years old vines prosper.

Our feature this week is their 2017 Merlot, a wine that’s been on our shelves for many years, representing fine value for years – Bright, intense red color. On the nose, it is very elegant and delicate and offers jammy aromas and also red fruits like plums and cherries. Subtle mineral notes are found that are reminiscent of gunpowder and the stones of the vineyard of origin. An excellent assemblage is achieved by the aromas of chocolate, smoke and tobacco. In the mouth, it is intense and complex with a long persistence, sweet and round tannins, and pleasing textures.

Gruber Roschitz is an ancient winery from Lower Austria, located in the western part of the Weinviertel wine region. Active since1814 when the wines were sold in bulk to inns and friends, the commercial side started in 1964. Nowadays, the estate is ran by the three Gruber siblings, Ewald, Maria and Christian, who take care of the 80 hectares situated between 250-360 meters above the sea level.

Theirs is a tremdous range of wines, with their basic offerings selling well at deVines for years. With out last visit at the winery, we tasted and loved their top cuvees, their Black Label range of wines, some of the best Austrian wines we’ve ever tasted, and brought these highly sought after wines for your consideration. Extremely limited availability.

On offer are the Black Label Riesling, Pinot Noir and St. Laurent bottlings, all top drawer stuff. The differences between microclimate, vineyards and terroir make Gruber Roschitz wines unique and all different from each other. They range from fruity and elegant to full-bodied and deep, all marked by that unmistakable mineral quality typical of this prestigious area. We also seeked out and brought in their very fine Riesling Eiswein. These have to be tasted to be believed. Many ‘tete-de-cuvees’ are twice the price from other producers.

Treat yourself to some of the best Austrians available.
