Our special this week is the 2018 Henry of Pelham Baco Noir Old Vines – $22.41 (regularly $27.99)

The land that Henry of Pelham Winery sits on dates back to 1794. An inn and tavern was built on this site in 1842 and the tavern’s liquor license was signed “Henry of Pelham” as a joking reference to a past British prime minister, Sir Henry Pelham. The name stuck. Paul Speck Sr. purchased the estate in 1982. Paul Speck Jr. becomes president in 1988 and helps to found the VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance) with a handful of other Niagara wineries.

The 300 acre estate is located in the Short Hills Bench sub-appellation of the Niagara Peninsula. Renown for its Baco Noir, a defacto Canadian classic and a Henry of Pelham classic. Discovered by is a French-American, Francois Baco, Baco Noir is a hybrid red wine grape with origins dating back to the late 1800’s being a cross between Folle Blanche and an unknown member of the New World’s Vitis Riparia family.

Grown from vines planted in 1984 and extremely low yields and 18 months of oak aging produced a deep ruby red colour with hints of purple. Ripe blackberry and plum aromas with coffee, cedar and smoky notes. Dry and full bodied with black cherry flavour. Well balanced with a long smoky finish.

Happy Canada Day everyone!! – note we are open Canada Day – noon-5pm
