The in-bottle release of Bordeaux 2020 is here. For only the 2nd time ever, Bordeaux has had a trio of great years – 2018, 2019 with the 2020 being the last of this trio. The last and only other time this occurred was 1988, 89 and 1990.

2020 is the so-called “Covid Vintage”, many people are buying this vintage to keep and bring out a decade or two down the road to celebrate and remember having made it through Covid. The vintage is the more classic of the three years, yet still has plenty of fruit but the structure will require some time in the cellar.

Please buy early to avoid disappointment as some of the listed available wines have only one bottle for sale while most are of limited quantities.

Our online feature this week is the Paul Jaboulet Aine Cotes-du-Rhone Villages (Rhone Valley, France) – $21.99 , regularly $27.49.

Paul Jaboulet Aîné is amongst the Rhône Valley’s most iconic and respected producers. Founded in 1834, the estate was bought in 2006 by Jean-Jacques Frey, the owner of 3rd Growth Bordeaux La Lagune. Under the Frey family, the estate worked to convert to sustainable farming, and in 2016 they were certified organic, a major achievement. They now farm biodynamically.

The reputation of Jaboulet wines rests on the quality of the well-situated and well-tended vineyards, on low yields, careful vinification, and diligent aging in oak casks. The preference for carefully integrated oak aging, in which the influence of wood is never allowed to become excessive has resulted in consistently well balanced wines across the entire portfolio. Since this is an important point, they have their own cooper who makes and maintains their stock of barrels.

Our feature this week is their Cotes-du-Rhone Villages – this organically certified red made from Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah exudes aromas of red fruits, strawberries, but also figs and sweet spices. The palate is broad, delicious, fresh and very suave. A powerful fruity treat that symbolizes the Jaboulet robustness and elegance – essential qualities of a fine wine. Pair with a hearty stew.

2019 Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva’s

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 12:29 am

produttori_2019_blog_small

The Produttori del Barbaresco Cooperative is one of the most successful and consistent cooperatives in the world of winemaking. The winery is one of the stars of the Barbaresco region in the Piedmont in Northern Italy. Established in 1958, there are now 56 growers who contribute their Nebbiolo grapes to the cooperative. The region covers over 100 hectares of premium nebbiolo grapes. In 1967, they were amongst the first wineries to produce single vineyard Barbaresco’s – there is nine different Cru Riservas produced only in exceptional vintages like 2015, 2016, 2017 and now 2019 having not made any Riserva’s in 2018.

A limited amount of the 2019 Riserva’s will be arriving at deVines this coming week. They remain one of the few high scoring, spectacular Barbaresco’s that sell for a reasonable price for their quality. You will no doubt want to stock up and/or add to your existing verticals. Verticals going back 40 years have shown how great these wines can be. Superbly located – Gaja (6 min away) and Giacosa (13 min away) are neighbours whose wines sell for 5 to 7 times this price.

A must in every connoisseur’s cellar, a bargain in the expensive world of Nebbiolo. Barolo’s and Barberesco’s with this kind of scores sell for double this price. Quantities are very limited and sold on a first come first served basis. In some cases, we only have one six pack for sale and no more to be had from the agent – once they’re gone, they are gone..

Our online feature this week is the Franck Balthazar Cotes-du-Rhone (Rhone Valley, France) – $22.99 , regularly $30.99.

Franck Balthazar is the nephew of the late Noel Verset (a great pioneer in Cornas), and purchased the 97-year-old parcel in Chaillot from him when Noel retired. He blends this old plot with his own 46-year-old parcel, both of which are on the granitic and sunny slopes of Les Chaillots. Plowing is done with a horse, and in the tiny cellar the grapes are pressed without being destemmed.

Don’t let the simple Côtes du Rhône label fool you,. This is definitely not your typical Côtes du Rhône, it’s serious business from one of the best, most traditional winemakers in the region. 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah from a small one and a half hectare organically farmed vineyard about an hour south of Franck’s cellar in Cornas. Hand harvested, wild fermented and aged in steel, then bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfur added. The previous vintage of this wine was featured in both our Best Bang for the Buck and deVine’s Wines of the Year picks.
