Our online feature this week is the 2020 Spy Valley Satellite Pinot Noir (Marlborough, New Zealand) – $18.99, regularly $24.99.

Spy Valley Wines is one of Marlborough New Zealand’s few remaining 100% Kiwi family-owned wine companies, owned and operated by the Johnson family since 1990.

Their award winning, sustainably crafted wines that capture the unique time and place of every harvest, is hidden in the heart of the region, one of the world’s purest for winemaking. With 160 hectares of pristine vineyards under vines, it just so happens that they share the valley with a satellite communication station that finds the terroir perfect for spying also.

Unlike the world of espionage, Spy Valley wine has demanded global attention, being a two-time IWSC New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year, its modern and vertically integrated winery and passion for excellence guarantees that Spy consistently produces globally acclaimed award-winning wines. Both the winery and vineyards are certified sustainable by the NZ Winegrowers Sustainable Winegrowing program.

“Satellite” refers to the winery’s proximity to an American intercept station. Ruby-red in colour. Lovely, intense nose of red berries, spice and mushrooms. On the palate, anise, nuts, cherry and vanilla make appearances. Fresh acidity, smooth and long on the palate. Try with a mushroom risotto or a cream of wild mushroom soup.
