2022 Bordeaux Futures Campaign

It’s that time of the year again – Bordeaux Futures. How does Futures work you ask? – well at its most basic level, you’re purchasing unfinished wine – you pay for it in full now, and in two years time (2025), they arrive and you have some great Bordeaux to cellar for some time before enjoying the fruits of your patience. The wines when released in-bottle will be 10-15% higher so you get a price break. Nowadays, you buy futures so you can get your hands on a bottle or two of something great and rare. Bordeaux being one of the great wines in the world – at the top end, demand far out strips availability and Futures may be the only way of ensuring you get your hands on some of the more illustrious houses.

2022 is already being hailed as perhaps the greatest vintage of the new century. It is being mentioned in the same breath as 1947, 1982 and 1990 or a cross between 2009 and 2010. It is being called an “Investor’s vintage”, where they think in the years to come, this vintage will become highly sought after by all and appreciate in value significantly. It was a hot vintage throughout, but with better know-how as to how to handle that (since the very hot 2003), the winemakers have produce something unique and rare, a uniformly great vintage for all the red grapes – thus no one region dominated.

I tasted a barrel sample from our friend Marc Vigneron (who sells most of the right bank Bordeaux to us) of Ch. Bouscaut in Pessac, and I was amazed at the great nose, concentrated fruit but above all a fabulously fresh, long and cashmere finish – if this was indicative of how even a moderate house can produce something this good…wow! He said there were record levels of people attending the En Primeur tastings in Bordeaux, so world wide interest is high.

Already we’ve seen from the early releases, a 15-30% increase in price over the 2021’s and even over the 2018 pricing, so at the high end, things will not be cheap and already with the Leoville Barton we see it is in high demand selling out very quickly irregardless of price. Do grab what you can afford, the Petit Chateaux will show well young, and the Grand Cru’s will deliver a unique experience in 20 years.

For those seeking the absolute top-tier, please drop us an email so we can help. It gets harder and harder every year to get the highest scoring most prestigious wines, some wines we get one 3pack. Of course, there isn’t enough to go around as every retailer wants some of the superstars leading to some frenzied buying and quick sellouts and staying up all night waiting for new releases/offers for a whole month.

As usual, items offered will be sold on a first-come first served basis and in some cases maximums applied. In many instances we won’t be able to go back for more of something once it sells out and if we do, price will be second tranche (release) higher pricing.

Please use the link below to subscribe to receive Futures offerings. If you’ve purchased Futures before, you are automatically enrolled. Subscribers can expect two offerings per week over 3 or 4 weeks beginning next week, the campaign will end early to mid June.

As usual, we’ll be offering some sweet Sauternes, whites, but this time around mostly focused on reds from Petit Chateaux to high end Grand Cru’s at various price points so there will be wines for everybody. Bottom line, if you’ve been hesitant to get into the Bordeaux Futures game, jump in now for this is a historically significant vintage to have in your cellars.

The Sassetti family (famous for their wonderful Brunello’s) lures one to their vineyards and cellar having farmed some of Montalcino’s finest vineyards for over a century in Central Italy. Located in the Montosoli hills, north of Montalcino, the story dates back to 1967 where Livio Sassetti worked the historic property through to the late 1970s, then purchased the 16 hectare vineyard of the now–famous Podere Pertimali. The Podere is particularly well-known area for the cultivation of the Sangiovese Grosso grape used in the making of Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino reds. Four generations of the Sassetti family have made wine in Montalcino and Livio was among the founders of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino, which was the same year the DOC(G) system became law.

This week’s feature, their Maremma adventure Montecucco Rosso La Querciolina is a 100% Sangiovese red from volcanic soil that is full-bodied, with medium tannins, lovely structure and dense notes of black cherry fruit laced with brambleberries, cedar, minerality and sweet spices. Time for some Syrah/Shiraz

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 11:44 am

syrah_shiraz_small
Author: Dirk Chan

We’re showcasing the Syrah or Shiraz grape this week. Both terminology refer to the same genetic grape – generallly speaking Syrah represents the old-worldstyle – leaner and more terroir driven (aka Northern Rhone), while Shiraz is more fruit forward, new-world in style (aka Australian Barossa Valley). Genetic profiling In 1998 established that the variety’s parents are in fact the obscure Mondeuse blanche and Dureza grapes, believed to be local to the Rhône-Alpes region of France. Some studies also show that, with great probability, Pinot Noir is the great-grandparent of Syrah/Shiraz, and both Viognier and Mondeuse Noire seem to be closely related to Syrah, too – the lines are pretty blurry.

Syrah/Shiraz can produce wines of great elegance that can age beautifully. Some of its distinct characteristics are intense black fruit aromas lined by a savory tapenade-like edge, medium to high tannins and black/white pepper spice. (Syrah/Shiraz is one of the varieties shown to contain more of a compound called rotundone, responsible for peppery aromas in wine.

Unlike other varieties, Syrah demonstrates a strict relationship between how severely it is pruned (i.e. yield) and how good the eventual wine is. On the other hand. some argue that is not so expressive of terroir.

Northern Rhône where it makes the muscular, deep-coloured, age-worthy, savoury and peppery wines of Hermitage. In Côte-Rôtie it makes more perfumed, slightly floral and refined wines, namely when co-fermented with a small percentage of the white Rhone grape Viognier, which gives the wine a special aromatic lift. Crozes-Hermitage, St Joseph and Cornas are other appellations worth looking at, offering earlier drinking and better-value examples.

Syrah has had an extraordinary surge in popularity throughout southern France and it now is the country’s third most planted red wine. It can be found through the southern Rhône, notably in Châteauneuf-du-Pape country, and has been firmly adopted in the Languedoc-Roussillon.

Cuttings of Syrah/ Shiraz, then known as Scyras, were likely taken to Australia from Montepellier by the so-called father of Australian viticulture. It was enthusiastically planted in California in the 1990s by the so-called Rhône Rangers, a group of winemakers determined to demonstrate that it may be even better suited to California than Cabernet Sauvignon. A vibrant community of Californian winemakers are consistently making very vibrant, refined Syrahs. Other countries like Canada and South Africa also produce some nice ones.

Not to be confused with is the Petite Sirah (with an i, not a y) grape, which is the name given to what has been shown to be a common California field blend that makes robust, tannic, spicy and earthy wines.

Enjoy!

weekly_bollini_small
Our online feature this week is the 2020 Bollini Pinot Grigio Rosato Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT (Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy) – $17.49 (regularly $21.49).

The story of Bollini began in 1979, when Neil and Maria Empson – who pioneered Italy’s quality wine exports a decade earlier – created their own label from their prime Alpine foothills locations of Friuli and Trentino. Their purpose was to showcase their terroir highlighting their excellence and consistency of international varieties in the cool northeastern region of Italy, all the while maintaining reasonable price points.

This week’s offer is their pink colored Pinot Grigio Rosato, a very in vogue thing these days to have a little bit of pink color in whites. Pinot Grigio grapes are de-stemmed and left to macerate for 72 hours in order to extract the typical light rosé colour from the skins resulting in a pale rosé colour, fruity and floral on the nose, with hints of pear and acacia blossoms. Dry and delicate on the palate, well balanced, with a pleasant fresh note. 2020 has been a very important year for Bollini wines as they achieved the Vegan Certification. This is great as an aperitif, this wine fits well with grilled fish, white meats and light dishes.
