2018 Louis Jadot “Celebration” 1er Cru Pre-Sell

This is the 4th release of the Jadot’s Beaune 1er Cru 150th Anniversary now renamed Celebration. We are offering this 2018 version as a Pre-Sell – $79.99, you purchase it now and we call you for pickup when it arrives in September 2021. This pre-sell offer ends Sunday, May 9th as we have to get our order in by then so please order asap.

I remember tasting the first release, the excellent 2009, which was followed by 2012, 2015 and now 2018. It is an assemblage of numerous Beaune climats that Jadot owns, it has always been an incredibly expressive and flat-out delicious Pinot Noir from the very beginning that doesn’t require decades of cellaring.

This special cuvée is made only in great years, and 2018 while a hot vintage, it is coming up as surprisingly fresh and lively and very fine in the Beaune region. It comes in its own designer label, separate from the customary Jadot labels. Giving the frost turmoil that happened earlier last month that destroyed a lot of vineyards all over Europe (including Burgundy), the prices of existing Burgundies on the market or upcoming are all going to increase so this a relative bargain and is actually cheaper than the last 2015 release. Burgundy lovers take notice!

Located in historic town of Vendée (an hours drive directly south of Nantes), the vineyards for Prieure La Chaume is in fact the southernmost vineyard of the Loire Valley, equidistant from the Loire and the Medoc of Bordeaux. Completely planted on chalky soil, one of the vineyards is planted on southern slopes, another third on western slopes facing the Atlantic ocean and more exposed to the maritime weather, and a remaining third on the plateau.

Our feature this week is their Prieure la Chaume Bel Canto – $29.99 (regularly $37.99), a 100% Merlot cuvee organically farmed featuring a deep mazarin redcurrant-y color with dark purple hints. First mouthfeel offers a supple and velvety wine, with black berries aromas such as blackcurrant. Both supple and meaty, this wine got a soft species finish with black pepper notes. The name is a tribute to the Opéra de Parisan opera singer, Genevieve XIV born in Nantes in 1879, who became famous for her performance of Bel Canto, said to be ‘soft, elegant and swingy’.

Bel Canto is vibrant, elegant and expressive. It is a wine to enjoy now. Classy, supple, fleshy, velvety with black berry fruits and a touch of spice and peppery notes on the finish.

2017 Prieure La Chaume Bel Canto (Loire Valley, France) – $29.99 (regularly $37.99)

Castello di Volpaia is a winery located in the medieval village of Volpaia. The estate has over 900 acres (360 ha) divided between vineyards, olive groves, and woods.

The village of Volpaia sits on a hilltop north of the town of Radda in the heart of the Chianti Classico region in Tuscany. Volpaia was built in 1172 as a fortified village on the Florence-Siena border. The winery’s logo highlights the coat of arms from the della Volpaia family, who lived in the village and took its name from the town itself. Volpaia is a terra murata, a walled village although not all of the wall exists now, Volpaia is one of the best preserved villages of its period .

Our feature this week is their 2018 Castello di Volpiaia Chianti Classico – $27.99 (regularly $34.99), showcasing cherry, walnut and stone aromas and flavors. Medium bodied, firm and lightly chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Delicious red from one of the flagships of Chianti, made from organically grown grapes.

The vineyards reside in high altitude – over 400m above sea level on predominantly sandstone soils rich in skeleton suitable for the production of elegant and long-lasting reds, harmonious and aristocratic wines that manage to maintain the fruity aromas of the best Sangiovese for a long time. Enjoy with pizza or pasta.

The famous American wine publication Wine Spectator reviews 15,000 plus wines every year and have been dishing out their annual Top 100 Wines of the Year since 1988 based on quality, value, availability and excitement..

With the diversity in the wine world, we in Alberta get fewer and fewer wines that make the Top 100 list as the years go by and sometimes even when we do, the vintage is wrong.

Therefore, we are thrilled to offer to you for consideration, two wines that made the Top Ten from 2020. Note there are years when we don’t have anything to offer from the Top Ten list, let alone two wines. Both are very limited availability and will be sold on a first come first served basis. Thus, If you want something special with some clout to serve at dinner parties when the pandemic is over, or if you merely want to compare your palate with those of the critics, here is your opportunity.

Lambrusco, the frizzante (slightly spritzy) red wine from northern Italy in Emilia-Romagna, has become extremely popular in the last little while. Driven by its pleasurable appeal and great PR, this fresh, fruity bubbly wine that’s low in alcohol, with an fine quality price ratio is one of Italy’s top sellers as a new generation of Millennials and Generation X drinkers find it quite chic to order a glass when going out. Even sommeliers in prominent restaurants and wine writers are trying to play up Lambrusco as today’s hot new trend. Look for hip labels, designed to appeal to the younger crowd. Most are dry, with the cheapest ones being sweet.

Most people think of Lambrusco as a single grape. Yet it is a family of grapes that can produce a product deeply colored to very light – that said, the aroma and taste of Lambrusco is quite distinctive and fruity with violets and plummy notes – they should be drank young.

Our feature of the week is their Medici Concerto Lambrusco – $21.99, regularly $26.99 – Intensely brilliant ruby red in color with fresh red berries, strawberries, raspberries and cherries on the nose. Dry and fruity, round on the palate. Very clean with perfect balance that would be a perfect pairing with a 4 meat pizza or some charcuterie!

José Maria da Fonseca started his business in 1834, and the family has maintained it for six more generations since then selling its wines in all continents. It is the oldest table wine company in Portugal and famous for its Periquita reds.

Located in the little village of Azeitão on the Setubal peninsula, south of Lisbon, they invest in research and production methods, utilizing both modern techniques with traditional methods, such as combining the ancient Roman tradition of fermenting wine in clay pots with the latest technology. The vineyard is 700 hectares.

Our feature of the week is their Waterdog Red – $11.99, regularly $14.99. Loving, loyal and intelligent, Portuguese Waterdogs are a treasured breed originally from the southern coast of Portugal – near where their winery originates. This blend of 34% Castelão, 33% Trincadeira and 33% Touriga Nacional grape varieties offers up a nose of blueberries, black currant and baking spices. The palate is fruity with notes of red and black berries, balanced acidity and a touch of wood from the six months aging on French and American Oak. Perfect for current drinking, pair with BBQ, roasts, hearty pasta dishes. Open a bottle and enjoy the Portuguese way of life!

Easter Dinner Wine Recommendations

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 2:34 pm

Easter is this coming weekend, and you’ll want some celebratory wines to accompany turkey & ham dinner or that special meal you’ll be preparing for your loved ones.

We receive many requests for food and wine pairings for this festive weekend so please contact us sooner than later for the best available selection and recommendations. If you have special needs, please let us know and we’ll be glad to help. Enjoy the long weekend everyone.

Our store hours this weekend are:

Good Friday: 12-5pm
Saturday: 11-6pm
Easter Sunday: Closed

In the meantime, those looking for the classic pairings with turkey, ham and all the regular fixings, please see below some of our current favourites:

Start your evening off with a sparkling wine, followed by whites, reds, a dessert wine and perhaps a little meditation course for digestifs or Port.

Sparkling Wines

Sparkling wines are a great way to start any gathering whether its a greeting aperitif or to pair with appetizers. Lively and clean, these will get everyone’s palate ready for what’s to come next:

NV Jaume Serra Castelfino Brut Cava (Penedès, Spain) – $16.99

NV La Jara Brut Prosecco (Veneto, Italy) – $18.99

NV Varichon & Clerc Privilege Rose Dry (Burgundy, France) – $21.99

2019 Huber Gruner Veltliner Blanc de Blancs Brut (Traisental, Austria) – $39.99

Champagne

Now if you serve Champagne, your audience will immediately know you’re here to do some serious partaking and celebrating:

gardet_charles
NV Champagne Baron-Fuente Grande Reserve Brut (Champagne, France) – $52.99

2013 Champagne Lancelot Pienne Brut Accord Majeur (Champagne, France) – $74.99

2008 Champagne Gardet Charles Rose de Saignee Brut Premier Cru (Champagne, France) – $109.99

NV Billecart-Salmon Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru (Champagne, France)- $149.99

2004 Bollinger R.D. Extra Brut (Champagne, France) – $359.99

Whites & Pinks

Whites with a touch of sweetness is preferred because of the sweetness of some of the fixings – candied yams, cranberry sauce, and honey for the glazed ham. A completely dry white will seem more austere and void of fruit due to the sweetness of the food so I recommend Rieslings (dry or off-dry, both work), Gewurztraminers or other Germanic or Alsace varietals. Having said that, some will always go with a dry creamy Chardonnay or Chenon irregardless and that’s perfectly fine. Also, don’t forget that rosés work really well too!

2019 La Playa Chardonnay Un-Oaked (Colchagua Valley, Chile) – $15.99

2018 La Peyriere Cuvee Prestige (Bordeaux, France) – $19.99

2019 Cave de Saumur Chenin Blanc Les Pouches (Loire Valley, France) – $21.99

2017 Dr. Heinz Wagner Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Spätlese (Mosel, Germany) – $37.99

2019 Domaine Delaporte Sancerre Chavignol (Loire Valley, France) – $42.99

2019 Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay (Walker Bay, South Africa) – $64.99

2017 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett (Mosel, Germany) – $144.99

2020 Agricola Gorgo Bardolino Chiaretto (Veneto, Italy) – $19.99

NV Johannes Zillinger Revolution Pink Solera (Weinviertel, Austria) – $34.99

Reds

For reds, try to avoid the big oaky tannic monsters. Oak and tannins are the enemies when pairing with slightly sweet food, try for a red with lots of up-front fruit, little oak and a soft tannins like a Beaujolais (served slightly chilled) or a Pinot Noir.

2018 Azul y Garanza Fiesta (Navarra, Spain) – $17.99

2018 Novaia Valpolicella Classico (Veneto, Italy) – $21.49

resonance
2016 Tommasi Masseria Surani Heracles Primitivo (Campania, Italy) – $24.99

2017 Malivoire Small Lot Gamay (Ontario – Niagara, Canada) – $28.99

2017 Cantine Barbera Perricone Microcosmo (Sicily, Italy) – $47.99

2015 Château de la Font du Loup (Chateauneuf-du-Pape, France) – $59.99

2014 Louis Jadot Beaune Boucherottes Premier Cru (Burgundy – Cote de Beaune, France) – $79.99

2011 Cune Imperial Gran Reserva (Rioja, Spain) – $92.99

1969 Adega Viuva Gomes Collares Reserva Tinto (Colares, Portugal) – $144.99

2004 Château L’Eglise-Clinet (Bordeaux – Pomerol, France) – $234.99

2005 Château La Providence (Bordeaux – Pomerol, France) – $299.99

Dessert

As for dessert, remember dessert wine should be sweeter than the dessert itself:

2019 Gruber Roschitz Beerenauslese Chardonnay (Weinviertel, Austria) – 375mL – $39.99

2016 Château Guiraud (Bordeaux – Sauternes, France) – 375mL – $59.99

2009 Zsirai Winery Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos (Villany, Hungary) – 500mL – $74.99

2009 Domaine Huet Cuvee Constance (Loire Valley, France) – 375mL – $169.99
messias_03
Port (Post Dinner)

Port is always good for the final touches of a meal:

Taylor Fladgate NV Historic Limited Edition Reserve Tawny Port (Douro, Portugal) – $54.99

2008 Fonseca Quinta do Panascal Vintage Port (Douro, Portugal) – $74.99

1977 Messias Colheita (Douro, Portugal) – $134.99

1965 Krohn Vintage Port (Douro, Portugal) – $309.99

1957 Kopke Colheita (Douro, Portugal) – $349.99

Chapoutier, or Maison M. Chapoutier, is a winery and négociant business situated in Tain-l’Hermitage in the Rhône region in France. Chapoutier produces wine from appellations all across the Rhône region, including our weekly online offer this week – the 2016 Crozes Hermitage Les Meysonniers – $24.99 (regularly $30.99). Chapoutier’s wines garner a lot of accolades and attention because of its quality and consistency. His wine labels are also distinctive as well because of their inclusion of Braille writing on all its labels since 1996 and many are certified organic including this red.

This is made from Syrah from the lower slopes and the flats south and east of the famed Hermitage Hill. The nose offers florals – violets, black pepper, an attractive meaty and leathery scents with a twist of smoky garrigue. The attack is more elegant than you might expect with meaty, peppery, savoury hints, roasted peppers and dried provencal herbs. The finish is of ripe cherries, plums and earthy hints with soft tannins. Lovely with a wintery stew.
