Our online feature this week is the NV Château de la Greffiere Cremant de Bourgogne Brut – $24.99 (regularly $32.99).

The Château de la Greffière estate is located near the town of Mâcon in southern Burgundy. The origins of the estate date back to 1585. The wine cellar was built in 1789 and the castle of the estate was built in 1830. The current owners, the Greuzard Family is in its 4th generation of farming the land and making great valued Burgundies. They work in a traditional way to express their terroirs, reaching for the best balance between the soil, the plant and the human being. This balance is achieved through observation and deep knowledge of their craft.

The Cremant Brut is made from 100% Chardonnay, from vineyards averaging 30 years of age. With a lovely white gold color and a nose of citrus fruit, florals and white blossoms. The palate has fine fruit, freshness, elegance and a very nice effervescence. This is a steal of a deal for quality Methode Traditionnelle Brut.

Annual Easter Dinner Wine Recommendations

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 12:45 pm

Easter is this coming weekend, and you’ll want some celebratory wines to accompany turkey & ham dinner or that special meal you’ll be preparing for your loved ones.

We receive many requests for food and wine pairings for this festive weekend so please contact us sooner than later for the best available selection and recommendations. If you have special needs, please let us know and we’ll be glad to help. Enjoy the long weekend everyone.

Our store hours this weekend are:

Good Friday: 12-5pm
Saturday: 11-7pm
Easter Sunday: Closed

In the meantime, those looking for the classic pairings with turkey, ham and all the regular fixings, please see below some of our current favourites:

Start your evening off with a sparkling wine, followed by whites, reds, a dessert wine and perhaps a little meditation course for digestifs or Port.

Sparkling Wines

Sparkling wines are a great way to start any gathering whether its a greeting aperitif or to pair with appetizers. Lively and clean, these will get everyone’s palate ready for what’s to come next:

NV Leitz Eins Zwei Zero Sparkling Riesling (Non-Alcoholic) (Rheingau, Germany) – $19.99

NV Famille Moutard Pere & Fils Brut Nature Grande Reserve (France) – $27.99

NV Tomato Wheels Lambrusco (Emilia-Romagna, Italy) – $34.99

2018 Gruber Roschitz Sekt Brut Reserve (Weinviertel, Austria) – $39.99

2017 Pere Ventura Vintage Rose Gran Reserva Cava Brut (Penedès, Spain) – $39.99

Champagne

Now if you serve Champagne, your audience will immediately know you’re here to do some serious partaking and celebrating:

moet_chandon_2013
NV Champagne Andre Clouet Grande Reserve Brut (Champagne, France) – $59.99

NV Champagne Liebart-Regnier Les Sols Bruns Demi-Sec (Champagne, France) – $62.99

NV Henri Billiot et Fils Rosé (Champagne, France) – $81.99

2013 Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage Extra Brut (Champagne, France) – $117.99

2014 Bereche et Fils Le Cran Ludes Extra Brut Premier Cru (Champagne, France) – $154.99

2016 Champagne Agrapart Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Mineral (Champagne, France) – $209.99

Whites & Pinks

Whites with a touch of sweetness is preferred because of the sweetness of some of the fixings – candied yams, cranberry sauce, and honey for the glazed ham. A completely dry white will seem more austere and void of fruit due to the sweetness of the food so I recommend Rieslings (dry or off-dry, both work), Gewurztraminers or other Germanic or Alsace varietals. Having said that, some will always go with a dry creamy Chardonnay or Chenon irregardless and that’s perfectly fine. Also, don’t forget that rosés work really well too!

2021 Franz Haas Kris Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie (Veneto, Italy) – $21.49

2021 Wild Goose Autumn Gold (BC – Okanagan, Canada) – $25.99

2019 Prieler Pinot Blanc Ried Seeberg (Burgenland, Austria) – $31.99

2021 Domaine de Triennes Rosé (Provence, France) – $23.99

2021 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé (Provence, France) – $63.99

Reds

For reds, try to avoid the big oaky tannic monsters. Oak and tannins are the enemies when pairing with slightly sweet food, try for a red with lots of up-front fruit, little oak and a soft tannins like a Beaujolais (served slightly chilled) or a Pinot Noir.

2021 Vietti Moscato d’Asti (Piedmont, Italy) – $40.99

Two wines as this week’s Online feature suitable for Easter Dinner – the white Château de la Greffiere Macon La Roche Vineuse Vieilles Vignes – $24.99 (regularly $31.99). The red feature is the Domaine Steeve Charvet Morgon Cote de Py – $22.99 (regularly $29.99).

The Château de la Greffiere Macon La Roche Vineuse Vieilles Vignes hails from the Macon, the source for relatively inexpensive white Burgundy – 100% Chardonnay is an impressively complex and balanced wine, with aromas and flavors of pink grapefruit, yellow skinned apple, and peach balanced with lighter brioche and floral notes, followed by a delightfully zesty finish. A real over-achiever that in more prestigious regions would be more than double this price.

The Steeve Charvet Morgon Cote de Py is Gamay from one of the famous Cru villages of Beaujolais where the shales and ancient pink volcanic rocks imparts its terroir into this light red. Six generations of family winemakers have left their mark here. Made from vines from 20-40 years of age on steep hillsides, this offers black currant and figs in a rich and velvety package with low tannins suitable for Turkey and all its side fixings.

Fruit Sakés

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 12:51 pm

Fruit sakés are trending nicely in Alberta. With its deep, concentrated varieties of fruit added to saké, these dangerously easy to drink sakés are a viable alternative to fruit coolers. With some even having fruit chunks in them, they feel like drinking a freshly plucked fruit fresh off a tree from an orchard. Mandarin oranges, pear, peach, pomegranite, plum, yuzu, pineapple, lychee, the list of fruit choices goes on and on.

There’s a reason they’re in small 330mL bottles, you will be under the table before you know it as the typical 7.5% alcohol is overwhelmed by the fruit and hardly noticeable.

Treat yourself to one nicely chilled and you’ll see why they are becoming increasingly popular.
