Amidst the typical Alentejano landscape in Central Portugal, there are the vineyards of Monte da Ravasqueira, about 1.5 hours drive east of Lisbon. Part of the José de Mello family for three generations now, Monte da Ravasqueira covers an area of about 3000 hectares. In 2012, Pedro Pereira Gonçalves took over winemaking duties with the challenge of rethinking Monte da Ravasqueira’s oenology philosophy and wine profile, betting on a sustained growth of the brand with the aim of making it a revered name in the Alentejo.

Guarda Rios is the Portuguese name for the Kingfisher bird, which lives in the Alentajano region. This young Tinto is blend of Tempranillo, Syrah, Tinta Amarela, and Alicante Bouschet. Dark and deep colour. Intense nose with spicy notes and notes of wild berries, forest, and a touch of vanilla. Full of volume to the palate, with a fine structure with notes of chocolate, cinnamon, mint and a tobacco persistent end with ripe tannins. Our online feature this week is the 2018 Miguel Torres Celeste (Ribera del Duero, Spain) – $20.99 (regularly $26.99).

Founded in 1870 by Jaime Torres, Bodegas Torres (Miguel Torres SA) is a historical wine growing company located in Pacs, some 4 km (2.5 miles) from Vilafranca del Penedès, where the company has its head office. Torres is the family winery with the most extensive vineyards in the Denomination of Origin (DO) of Penedès and the largest winery in Spain. They also run the Miguel Torres Chile winery in the Chilean Central Valley, and in the United States (California) where in 1986 Marimar Torres founded Marimar Estate. Torres is also Spain’s largest producer of DO wines under its own label, exporting to more than 140 countries.

The Celeste is a deVines favourite, it is born 895 meters above sea level, where the vines and the sky form a magical connection, resulting in a wine filled with the freshness, emotion, and intensity of a starry night. Hence, the name and astrological label. Located in the Ribera del Duero D.O. wine region in north central Spain, the area stretches about 115km along “the banks of the river Duero” touching the provinces of Soria, Burgos, Segovia and Valladolid.

Celeste is an opulent yet structured wine brimming with fruit, body and colour: as unique as the night sky in the Ribera del Duero. Decant for a half hour and paired with some grilled meats.

Charton Hobbs and deVines has put up the Lady Gaga Dom Perignon window display, check it out next time you’re downtown.

The packaging reflects the design of the partnership’s campaign, titled the Queendom, launched with an accompanying short film directed by iconic fashion photographer and director Nick Knight, a soundtracked by a Gaga Chromatica track, “Free Woman”, and a special sculpture – all meant to be a celebration of creative freedom.

Gaga adds – “For me, it’s not about where, but when,” she also says in her email. “I like to toast with Dom Pérignon to celebrate life. To celebrate achievements. To celebrate each other. And to celebrate the kindness in the world.”

Located in the heart of the Douro region where the river flows into Northern Portugal, in Cima Corgo in the Vale do Rio Torto, the first records of Quinta Vale D. Maria date back to 1868. Our online feature this week is the 2019 Clos Montblanc Proyecto Cu4tro White and 2017 Clos Montblanc Proyecto Cu4tro Red (Catalonia, Spain) – $16.99, regularly $21.99.

Half an hours drive north of Tarragona, in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, to the south of the Pyrenees mountain range lies the Clos Montblanc winery. This Catalonia producer is one of the references in the DO Conca de Barberà wine region. This is owing not only to the amount of wine and Cava it produces on a yearly basis (around 900,000 bottles), but also to the quality of its white and red wines as well, 90% of which are exported.

40 hectares of the winery’s own vineyard as well as from an additional 160 hectares belonging to other vine growers that the winery accesses and supervises throughout the year. The wines reflect the character of the landscape and soil (clayey, calcareous, slaty…). In addition to the different altitudes of the vineyards, which gives the wine a coveted richness, the winery prioritises the variety and the fruit with the aim of producing wines that are easy to drink and that attract a wide range of customers.

Enjoy the tangy (zesty & citrus) white and the fruity (mullberry & plummy) red with or without food.
