Bordeaux 2015 Futures – Update #2

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 5:33 pm

bord2Author: Dirk Chan

The 2015 Bordeaux Futures campaign is well underway and the response has been exceptional. 2015 looks to be an excellent vintage (certainly the best since 2010) where the Merlot based right bank appellations of Pomerol, St. Emilion are the highlights of the vintage. On the Cabernet based left bank, Margaux and Pessac-Leognan appear to be head of class. There are bargains in the right bank satellite regions, with an overall impression of fairly good value (for a change). Pricing is down from the highs of 2009 & 2010’s so this is the vintage to stock up on if you’re at all interested in cellar worthy Bordeaux from an excellent vintage.

Listed below are offerings, quantities are limited and are allocated on a first come first served basis. If you’re interested you can certainly drop us an email with the desired wine(s) and quantity. You can purchase online individually, but if you’re going to buy a lot, we’d prefer you email us and we can allocate for you now and do one invoice for full payment at the end of the campaign (makes it easier for us to manage) – thank you.

Check out the offerings here..

Rosé season usually starts end of May, but with our prematurely warm Edmonton weather, the demand is about a month earlier than expected. We’ve scrambled to fill our shelves with the pinks to satisfy the burgeoning demand.

2015 Bordeaux Update & First Offerings

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 1:25 pm

2015_first_offeringAuthor: Dirk Chan

The 2015 Bordeaux Futures Campaign has officially begun with a dribbling of Petit Chateaux and a few Cru Bourgeois (see below for the first offerings). The classifed Grand Cru Classe’s will be coming over the course of the next 3-4 weeks.

This is the last call for advance consultation where you identify to us your wishlist of wines, your budget, your favourite appellation or favourite chateau that we will then help fulfill.

Note that we will purchase wines based on the result of all of the advance consultations and offer it to those who have come forward first. Any unsold bottles after the fact will then go on the website for sale to the general public – thus by then availability of what is left may be extremely limited. So, please come forward asap for the best selection. The final deadline for advance consultation will be end of day April 30th.

2015 looks to be an excellent vintage (certainly the best since 2010) where the Merlot based right bank appellations of Pomerol, St. Emilion & satellites are the highlights of the vintage. On the Cabernet based left bank, Margaux and Pessac-Leognan appear to be head of class. Thus we will focus on these appellation for the Petit Chateaux, Cru Bourgeois and Grand Cru Classe’s.

Please feel free to drop us a line at ‘info@devinewines.ca’, or come in person to talk with us.

We will need to know:

1) what your total budget
2) what your average price per bottle
3) class of wine (First Growths, Super Seconds, Third-Fifths Growths, Cru Bourgeois or Petit Chateaux)
4) desired appellation(s) (Left Bank – St. Estephe, Pauillac, St. Julien, Margaux, Pessac, Haut Medoc, Medoc or Right Bank – Pomerol, St. Emilion, Satellites)
5) if you know of specific Chateaux you definitely want, please let us know
6) if you have a vertical of a particular Chateau going, please let us know

We are doing the advance consultation to:

1) help you get what you want at the price you want in the quantities you want
2) help us buy the wines on first tranch prices (with each subsequent tranche (or offering), the price goes up)
3) help us not having to warehouse excessive inventory

This year, we require full payment upfront (this locks the wine in irrespective of exchange rate fluctuations) and the wines will arrive in the store mid-year 2018.

tour_bessan2

Looking for the Perfect Sauvignon Blanc

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 6:31 pm

astrolabe_sbAuthor: Dirk Chan

With the warming weather, we’re already noticing a higher demand for whites. One of the favourites is for Sauvignon Blancs, known for its crisp, elegance and freshness. Other common characteristics include gooseberries, cut grass, fresh peas and passionfruit. This green-skinned grape variety originates from the Bordeaux region of France. The grape most likely gets its name from the French words sauvage (“wild”) and blanc (“white”).

Sauvignon blanc is planted in many of the world’s wine regions. While it is a component of the famous dessert wines from Sauternes and Barsac and in White Bordeaux and Sancerre (Loire), many countries now produce world class Sauvignon Blancs, including New Zealand followed by Chile, Italy, Canada, South Africa, Germany and California (sometimes called Fume Blanc).

Great for outdoor drinking, great in picnics – pair with vegetarian dishes, fish or poultry. Don’t serve too cold.

Here are a few of our current favourite Sauv Blancs:

2014 Montes Classic Series Sauvignon Blanc (Casablanca Valley, Chile) – $15.99

2014 Creekside Sauvignon Blanc (Ontario – Niagara, Canada) – $19.99

2014 Rustenberg Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc (Stellenbosch, South Africa) – $21.99

2014 Astrolabe Voyager Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough, New Zealand) – $22.49

2014 Hubert Brochard Sancerre (Loire Valley, France) – $27.49

2012 Hexamer Sauvignon Blanc QbA Trocken (Nahe, Germany) – $27.99

2013 Livio Felluga Sauvignon (Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy) – $41.99

2014 Casa Marin Cipreses Sauvignon Blanc (San Antonio Valley, Chile) – $42.99

2014 Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc (California – Napa Valley, United States) – $46.99

Enjoy!!

Winemaker’s Tasting with Benjamin Silver

Filed under: deVine's Daily Blog Article — Dirk @ 12:29 pm

silver_tastingAuthor: Dirk Chan

On Thursday, April 28th at 7pm, deVine welcomes winemaker Benjamin Silver of Silver Wines for a special sit-down tasting of his portfolio. Located in Santa Barbara, California, Silver’s terroir driven, varietally correct and well priced wines have found a niche in our store over the years.

Benjamin learnt his craft at the Zaca Mesa Winery in the mid nineties, and launched his own label in 2000. Silver Wines currently produces small bottlings of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and unusually Nebbiolo, and two proprietary blends: Saviezza & I Tre Figli. All grapes are sourced from the Santa Barbara County.

Benjamin sums up his winemaking philosophy: “For vineyard designated wines, I strive to focus on protecting a vineyard’s unique personality stamp. The vineyard’s site specific mesoclimate, influencing the constant: grape vines growing in the same soil over many years. For blends, it’s all about balance or the marriage of different parts coming together to become a great Silver styled wine. That’s what makes winemaking exciting!”

Benjamin will be bringing a surprise or two for this tasting…It’s been quite a few years since Benjamin’s done a tasting with us, so be sure to sign up early to hear and taste with one of the most talented winemakers in Santa Barbara. You can sign up for this event here..

In the meantime, here are three Silver favourites currently in stock:

2009 Silver Pinot Noir (California – Santa Barbara, United States) – $36.99

2010 Silver Trentotto Syrah (California – Santa Barbara, United States) – $44.99

2009 Silver I Tre Figli (California – Santa Barbara, United States) – $59.99
